literary criticism

My personal favorite book is The Alienistby Caleb Carr. The Alienist is a book of a serial killer in New York in 1896. Since at this time serial killers where new the story follows the detectives and psychiatrist that are trying to capture this serial killer. There are many mixed reviews about this book some either like it or dont. I believe that a "literary criticism" should not be the reviewers personal views about the book. I think it should rather inform the future reader of the novel or viewer of the movie what its briefly about. We all have a diffrent taste for novels and movies. A book I may love other may hate and vice versa. Who am I (or anyone) to sit here and tell you this book sucked or this book was amazing. Someone can write a review saying how much they loved a novel or movie because it appealed to them and they persoanlly liked it. Meanwhile i can go and watch the same movie or read the same book and hate it because i ahve a diffrent taste in what i like. For example:

"So I was recently reading Edmund Wilson's memoir, The Twenties, when I noticed something curious. Wilson's a competent enough writer and was a minor celebrity in his own right--he even placed a book on the Modern Library Top 100 Nonfiction Books of the 20th Century--but I found myself only really paying attention when he's talking about the other personalities of the day : F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. L. Mencken, Dorothy Parker, etc. They somehow seemed to be more compelling figures, and the rest of the book, which Wilson has to carry by the force of his own personality, seemed flat and less interesting. Unfortunately, the same phenomenon plagues Caleb Carr's novel, The Alienist. " (Brothersjudd.com 2009)

I can read this review and thikn to myself ok this book is going to be boring why bother reading it. But after reading the book i can sit here and tell you that the book was so far from flat and not intersesting.

In conclusion i think literary criticism should stick to the facts. Telling what the movie or novel is about. Not about what you personally taught about it. That way the only review that matters is your persoanl taughts about it.

New Journalism

New Journalism is the process of taking a non-fiction event and writing it down as if it was fictional. This is commonly done by adding dialogue in the story that may not have actually taken place during the event. I dialogue even did take place during the event what exactly was said does not have to be put into the story exactly how it was said. I personally think this is a great and refreshing way to tell a story compared to the usually boring tone of regular newspaper articles. Tom Wolfe is said to be the creator of New Journalism in 1960 and wrote a book called "The New Journalism." Inside he said "It showed me the possibility of there being something ‘new' in journalism." (Wolfe 14) Even though this is an interesting way of telling a non-fiction story newspapers rarely publish articles this way, instead magazines tend to publish more of there articles in this style.

Footnote

Aldous Huxley is a world renowned author that is for the most part miss-understood by the majority of readers. In "The Doors of Perception" Huxley talks about his hallucinogenic trips while on a number of different drugs but mainly a drug called Mescaline. He would later proceed to write about these trips and would openly tell his readers how he taught we should all have a "Chemical vacation." These "chemical vacations" altered Huxleys thinking, it made him more creative, and gave him a different view on life. Even though i do not agree with Huxley he felt very strongly about his "chemical vacations" saying that through these drugs people could connect more with there spiritual life within themselves.

Abstract.

People who drive fast sprots cars have a longer life-span then those who dont. During a 30 year period we studied the life-span of individuals who drove sports cars and compared there life-span to those who drove average cars. Those who drove sports cars such as Lamborghinis, Vipers, or Ferrari tended to live longer and more fun lives. We believe this is due to the fact that because of the heart pounding speeds reached in these cars the drivers over time developed a stronger cardio system.

Cubism

Cubism is probably one of the most neglected art forms covered by an author. Cubism is a type of art that is thought to have orignated from Europe sometime in the 20th century. The two main creators of Cubism are Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Cubism is an important art form because during this movement many major changes where made to way artist both painted and sculpted. What is misunderstood about Cubism is that theres more to it then just drawing symetrical shapes. With cubism an artist is able to change the length and width of the shapes walls to play with the depth and make it look three dimensional.
